Richard III questions (for Monday May 11th)
A) To sum up what we said:
- The War of the Roses opposed two families who wanted the throne of England in the second half of the XV century: the Yorks were represented by a white rose, while the red rose was the symbol of the Lancaster family.
- Richard, Duke of Gloucester has two brothers, the king and Clarence.
- In the first soliloquy, Richard first explains that thanks to the new king his brother Edward, war is over...
BUT he is different, difformed, and hates this new era.
THEREFORE he has decided to become a villain and he explains his plots: he has invented a prophecy which means that a certain "G" will kill the king's heirs...
As their brother is called George Clarence, the king will immediately accuse him of plotting...
B) Questions about Act 1 scene 1 (text and adaptation):
A) Why do people laugh when Richard mentions the "SON of York"?
B) Pick out elements refering to war and peace at the beginning of the soliloquy.
C) What does Richard accuse the king of?
D) In the film why does the rest of the scene take place in the bathroom? According to you why are the mirrors useful ?
